Soongjung-jeon

Location; 2ga, Shinmun-ro, Chongro-ku, Seoul

Soongjung-jeon is an official palace of Kyung-Hee palace.
Kyung-Hee palace had built from 1617 till 1620 under the reign of Koanhaegoon in Chosun dynasty, and it had been used as a royal villa of Chosun for 290 years. But when Kyungsung middle school was built by Japan in 1910, directly after Japanese occupation, it was demolished by force and forfeited its value as a palace.
Originally Soonjung-jeon was moved into a Buddhist temple of Choghesa in 1926. Now it is used as a sermon hall of Buddhism that is called Junggak-won placed in Dongkuk University. Yet it’s building is too worn-out to move somewhere else. In 1980 a site of Kyung-Hee palace was designated as a historic relics. Authorities executed five times excavation and investigation in 1985 and on the basis of that result Soonjung-jeon, an official palace, had been resorted over 6 years from 1989.
The building is made after Choosympo, a style which a beam, so-called kongpo, is put upside where a pillar is placed at the 5th front partition and the 4th side partition, and its octagonal roof assumes a sanctified dignity of palace.
To the south of it is there located the Soongjung Gate: to the east, the Yeochoon Gate: to the west, the Euichoo Gate: and to the north, the Jajung Gate, which is the front gate of Jajung-jeon, a queen’s palace.

-Extracted from an introduction of Soonjung-jeon

Where is there no building but had suffered ordeal by Japanese among the palace of Chosun dynasty?
However…
Kyung-Hee palace is still hidden by the building of Kyungsung middle school.
When entering the Hongwha Gate, we can’t see it.
If we go to the back of the building which had been a school for Japanese during the period of Japanese seizure, there stands Kyung-Hee palace silently being turned away from others.

The building, which leads to block off the road that used to be straight connecting the Hongwha and the Soongjung Gate and to cover Kyung-Hee palace, doesn’t exist in my work yet.
Entering through the Hoonghwa Gate, people see Kyung-Hee palace.
And then they step inside the Soongjung Gate walking along that road.
