In the Opening Project, SoYoun Jeong presents videos she look at openings of Korea-related exhibitions held in New York, while living there several years ago. The shows are largely divided into two categories: the first is exhibitions presented by the New York-based Korean galleries and the second is exhibitions presented by Korean galleries directly. New York-based Korean artists come to have more complicated political and physical layers as a result of these processes. SoYoun Jeong, who was active in Korea and later moved to United States, encapsulates such phenomena in her video work from her own distinct angle. This project can be referred to as a type of ecological report on artists as social beings in a specific time and space and will be continued during her stay in New York.

[The Opening Project] 는 정소연이 몇 해 전부터 뉴욕에 이주해 살면서 그 곳에서 열리는 한국인 관련 전시의 오프닝에 찾아가 촬영한 영상들을 담아낸 작업이다. 이 전시들은 크게 두 가지로 나뉘는데, 하나는 뉴욕 내에서의 한국 베이스 작품 전시이고, 또 하나는 한국에서 곧바로 뉴욕에 소개되는 전시이다. 이러한 과정을 통해 드러나는 뉴욕 내 작가들은 좀 더 복잡한 층위의 정치적, 물리적 층위를 지니게 되고, 한국에서 작품 활동을 하다가 미국에 건너온 정소연이라는 작가의 이중적 위치는 독특한 시선으로 그러한 현상을 작품으로 담아내는 것이다. 속해 있는 공간에 따른 사회적 존재로서의 현대미술 작가의 생태적 보고서라 할 수 있는 이 프로젝트는 작가가 뉴욕에 거주하는 동안 지속적으로 진행될 것이다.
